427 Pound Tuna not a Record Due to Technicality

In saltwater fishing’s version of baseball’s infamous pine tar incident, an angler who reeled in a world-record yellowfin tuna had his home-run catch called back — because a deckhand touched his fishing pole as he fought the mighty fish.

Robert Pedigo hooked the 427.9-pound fish last Thursday and fought it for a half-hour before bringing it aboard the “Journeyman.” But everyone on board agreed that Danny Osuna, a local captain working that day as a deckhand, blew the record by touching Pedigo’s pole during the battle between man and beast off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The rules say an angler can’t have any help pulling in a fish if he or she wants to make history.

“I do this for a living and we’re really hardcore fishermen,” Osuna told FoxNews.com. “We have caught a lot of fish in the high 300s, but this is the first time we’ve caught something like this.”

Osuna admitted touching Pedigo’s fishing rod, disqualifying the catch from consideration by the International Game Fish Association. But he said Pedigo, who could not be reached for comment, isn’t too broken up about the technicality.

“We’re fine with that,” Osuna said. “Actually, we never even thought the fish would be that big.”

Osuna said everyone who was in on the fishing trip got a big meal out of the monstrous catch before the rest was given away.

“We never sold the fish,” he said.

Like the famous home run by George Brett in 1983 that was disqualified when Yankees Manager Billy Martin pointed out that the Kansas City Royals’ slugger had pine tar smeared too high on the barrel of his bat, the pole touch indeed disqualifies the catch, according to IGFA officials.

A spokesman for the agency confirmed to FoxNews.com that the all-tackle record for yellowfin tuna remains 405 pounds, caught by Mike Livingston near Baja Sur, Mexico — because Osuna touched the rod.

“No one (to my knowledge) has been contacted by the angler or any member of the crew in regards to this catch,” IGFA World Record Coordinator Jack Vitek wrote in an email. “We have heard of the catch on various fishing forums and websites, and are pleased to hear that the angler and crew are being up front about such an impressive catch, and are respecting the IGFA rules.”

World Record Bass: Japan’s Giant Largemouth

The world is waiting in anticipation with reports of a possible new world-record large mouth bass caught in Japan.  Normally you’d expect this news to come out of southern California where big bass are regularly caught such as the one Mac Weakley foul hooked weighing in at just over 25 pounds.  That monster was caught in Dixon Lake and many assumed if another such bass was caught that was the hot spot.   Now it appears that the place to go for monster trophy bass is half way around the world Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture in Japan.  The reports are of a 22 pound, 5 ounce world record bass caught by Manabu Kurita.

If the record weight for a bass is certified the bass is 1 ounce heavier than the current record large mouth bass held by George Perry which has stood for 77 years.  Sadly even if certified the new rules by IFGA require world records of fist 25 pounds or under to beat the old record by 2 ounces which would technically make this a tie.

Where and how to catch Snook

The Snook is a large fish similar to a Pike with a protruding lower jaw and a prominent lateral stripe that runs just behind the gills to the tail. The Snook is mostly a silvery-green color with fins that can be bright yellow.

The Snook is a sleek strong fish. They can grow up 48″ and 50 pounds. The record Snook ever caught in Florida weighed in at 44 lbs. 11 ounces. Snook are found from the Western Atlantic from South Carolina clear down to Brazil, South America. Snook are highly tolerant to a wide range of water salinity from freshwater to saltwater. They are however, very sensitive to temperature changes particularly in cold weather. Water temperatures below 60 degrees can cause Snook to go into shock or even die. In colder areas, Snook can be found congregating in warm water discharged by power plants. They normally gather near shorelines, inlets and estuaries.  They also prefer structures for shelter such as mangroves, rock formations and a variety of reef structures.

The Snook is a stong fish and thrilling to catch, much like the Largemouth Bass. That is one of the many reasons why it is one of the most sought after d gamefish to catch. Once hooked it’s strength and speed is hard to compare to other game fish of its size.

Fishing Basics:
Live shrimp – Once you’ve found where Snook has been located, fish live shrimp using a 10 to 20 pound line with 30 inches of 40# shock leader tied to a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. Use only enough split shot or sinker to get it to the bottom.

Live bait fish – We’ve seen good success with Mullet, menhaden, pinfish, etc. Use the same outfit as above but using a larger hook to match the bait.

Lures – Many types of lures and jigs can be used to catch snook. Some of the better ones include the Red Tailed Hawk jigs and Mirrolures.

Tides:

Snook fishin is best from one hour before high tide through the following three hours of the falling tide.

Location:

Most Snook caught by recreational fisherman are taken during the summer months. The best Snook fishing spots are Tampa Bay on the central west coast of Florida and Jupiter, Lake Worth, and Sebastian Inlets on the central Florida Coast.
