Knowing How Turkeys Behave Will Help You Hunt Them

Fall was the preferred time to hunt wild turkeys by most of the famous old time turkey hunters and is still favored by many traditionalists. These turkey hunting experts liked it best because it was a lot more difficult and therefore more rewarding to call in an old turkey in the fall rather than the spring.

Gobblers in the late summer, fall and winter become very solitary animals with very little interest in females. They do, however, gobble in the fall and there have been a few mornings in October and November that you would think that it was spring with the huge number of gobblers around. On rare occasions, gobblers will even come in strutting and gobbling just like it was spring. More likely though, you won’t even notice a fall turkey reacting to your calls. The fall season has regained its popularity recently with the ever-increasing numbers of turkeys. This sport requires seperate permits for hunters during the fall, along with the applications for spring hunting permits. Turkey hunters are allowed only to take only one wild turkey of either sex during that fall season each day.

Turkeys are usually found in open, mixed hardwood and pine forests. Others are scattered in brush land. Others prefer to roost in trees larger than the surrounding vegetation and will often choose place to stay on sites facing slopes where they can shelter from the existing strong wind. They will use open fields and meadows as feeding and boasting sites and wooded areas are roosting sites. If few or no roosting sites are available, the turkey may leave the place and not use it.

Basic Turkey Characteristics

Turkeys’ ears are also placed on both sides of their heads. And because they have no outer ear to develop the sound in one direction, they hear sounds all the way around them. Sounds received by only one ear can help the turkey find out which direction the sound comes out but not any indication of distance. Turkeys turn around to be more alert.

With a highly developed sense of smell, they can determine the direction of danger by scent and wind direction. The clever beasts generally flee away from the danger, not toward it. Besides their sense of smell, they rely heavily on both their eyes and ears to determine the direction of danger before they run away from it.

Turkey Hunting for Beginners

There are many ways to hunt for turkey besides using guns and firearms. Hunters need to be resourceful and creative in order to surprise Turkeys and subdue them. They can use tools such as nets, wood and ropes to catch turkeys if they are placed in the proper position. Turkeys are very fast runners but often neglect to check which direction they are headed. Hunters should take advantage of this by creating traps to catch and bag the bird. This should eliminate the use of guns that lead to injury for the bird.

On trap would include the use of household ropes to capture the turkey. Ropes can be arranged in a net pattern. This is done by weaving them together with smaller ropes and threads. A strong spring can be added that would rapidly close when the right pressure is applied. If a turkey runs into the net, the trap will spring close thus catching the bird.

The locations can be placed within a trap. A good trap is the cloth platform. This is a hole in the ground camouflaged by using leaves, twigs and branches. Tips for Selecting Camping Gear

It’s time to go camping, how exciting. With all of the things you’ll need to bring, you are worried about what to take and it’s sapping the life out of the camping trip. How are you going to start gathering up the right camping gear. You need to ensure that you have all the basics in the right place and ready to go before the camping trip.

1) Depending on what kind of camping trip you are taking, where you are going and you activities you will need to pack accordingly. If you were to go camping in Alaska while forgetting the misquito spray, you may as well never pack, you’re going to be eaten alive. So it’s best to think of any special items you will need for your trip up front. Like if the area you are camping is damp or wet you can never have too many tarps. If you are going where there are bears it’s good to have something to tie food into a tree etc.

2) Before your trip look for local sales flyers. You never know what your local camping / sporting goods store may have in there that you will see and go, yeah I need that. And who know you might find it on sale.

3) Also it’s good to go to places like Walmart and see what they have. Not always the best quality but they might have some of the items that you forgot. Even if you don’t buy it there it’s good to look and see so you’ll know you need to get it.

4) If you are new to camping you should probably consult some camping tip sites, like this one to make sure you have covered your bases. There is nothing worse than going camping and not having something important. I went one time with my wife and we had everything under the sun, except pillows. We were too far away to go back and get them so we had to improvise and use towels, but what a dumb thing to forget.

5) Sometimes buying all of the gear you need isn’t the right solution. You camp say once or twice a year at most there’s no need to have $1,000 in camping gear, ask friends and family if they have some items you can borrow.

6) Having something to put your camping gear in is really helpful. We like to take extra backpacks. They are easy to carry, hold quite a bit and can be moved easily. We also have a large duffel bag filled with items. Now when we go it’s as simple as one, two, three or 10 bags LOL

7) Make sure any food items you may have are not out of date. Nothing like thinking you have items only to find out they have spoiled or are woefully out of date. Most food will be good for a while after that date in a pinch but best to check up front.

Do you have the right cold weather gear. You might be used to hot summers and then go to a mountain region where it gets down in the 50′s at night. That can be mighty cold. Also are you ready for rain? A cheap poncho is easy to carry and lightweight but in a downpour it’s a must have.

10 Night Hunting Tips

Here are some little points to consider that may pay off in big dividends…

1.) Watch the Wind: We are not only talking about your setup, but as you approach your stand position. Many predators catch human scent as hunters walk to a set up. Do not walk into a location when your scent is
going to be beating you there.

2.) Crunchy snow: This tip is related to #1. Predators have fantastic hearing. If the snow is noisy, you will spook game out of the area. For nighttime hunts, make short calling set ups as soon as possible without having to walk far distances. Hunters can then progress into the hunting area knowing that any close vicinity predators have fair opportunity to respond with minimal spooking.

3.) Know your distances: Misjudging distance is a contributor to misseing shots. If you have access to land for night hunting, be sure that you use a rangefinder in the daylight on landmarks such as hedgerows, trees, and farm equipment. By doing so, you will have an idea of distance when a predator shows up in the darkness of night.

4.) Anticipate the shot: This is not an exact science, but if you have your gun pointed in the right direction when a predator appears, you will have a major advantage. In the dark, hunters can move to adjust a shot slightly more than during the light. If the predator howls or barks in the distance, you can anticipate his approach better as well. By having your weapon ready, you can concentrate on the shot and not on getting into position without being detected.

5.) Watch the backside: It is believed that for every 1 predator spotted by hunters, 5 more respond without being seen. When hunting with a partner, have one hunter sit facing the opposite direction. It is this hunter who may intercept the predators as they approach the backside of a set up in attempt to wind the situation.

6.) Is your light ready?: Proper spotlight care is vital to its use afield. If you simply snap on a red lens and start hunting, you may be in for trouble. Many times the red lens will not for a secure fit around the light and a white light will leak out. This is enough to scare off predators in many situations. In order to prevent this, take camouflage tape and seal off the area around the lens. Another tip is to place a tube made out of cardboard or pvc around the light. The tube will really direct the light beam and avoid the occurrence of lighting up objects close to the hunter.

7.) A battery of batteries: We mentioned previously that equipment involved in night hunting is often cumbersome to carry. Knowing that a single spotlight will not carry enough charge to get you through a night, the hunter must have a backup plan. One idea is to purchase multiple lights. I did this and still have 3 or 4 at my disposal. However, it gets to be a pain to carry them around and have them in your backpack and even in your vehicle. A more efficient idea is to purchase spare 6 volt batteries and have them with you. Although they have some weight, they are far less bulky. A Lightforce brand light, with it’s 12 V batery will alleviate all your battery woes.

8.) Hidden Landscapes: The last thing you want to happen is to call in a coyote only to loose sight of him as he approaches. This usually happens when hunters set up in new areas and do not realize that the terrain has dips or rises in it that will hinder your vision at the moment of truth. It is often beneficial to set up high in the landscape so that you are looking down on the area you are calling.

9.) Proper use of spotlight: The manner is which you use your light may have direct consequence on hunting success. Number one, scan the area quickly. Keep the beam moving to catch any eyes of incoming critters. If eyes are detected, keep the light on! Switching the light on and off may alarm or spook the predator. Direct the beam so that the bottom edge of the beam (known as the halo) is on the eyes. Many times a predator will get spooked if the intensity of the main beam is focused directly at the eyes. It is best to play it safe and only highlight the glowing eyes by using the halo to your advantage.

10.) After the shot: The work is not complete when the trigger has been pulled. Hopefully, you will hear the telltale “thump” of a hit. Even so, keep calling and scanning the area for other predators as it is not uncommon to have them come in as pairs. Make a mental note of where you shot, so that you will have an easier time of finding the downed critter. Better yet, have a partner keep a light on the critter as you go to retrieve it.

9 Steps for How to Field Dress a Deer

Good job! You got a deer. Now it’s time to talk about how to clean a deer. The first step is field dressing a deer.

Learning how to field dress a deer properly can significantly improve the taste and quality of your venison meat.

The Marty Prokop 9 Steps for How to Field Dress a Deer

1) How to clean a deer starts with a good kit to field dress a deer. When I head out for a day deer hunting I always carry a complete deer field dressing kit.

2) Members of my deer hunting community at free-deer-hunting-tips.com often ask, “ Marty Prokop, what do you bring to clean a deer?”

Here is what I bring to field dress a deer: latex gloves, large Ziploc-type bag, hand sanitizer, wet ones or wet rag for washing my hands, a sharp knife, a “belly zipper” or gut hook knife and 10 to12 foot of rope.

3) Part of how to field dress a deer is packing this kit into a large enough Ziploc-type bag and remembering to place it in your deer hunting back pack. The total weight of my kit to clean a deer is only about 12 to14 ounces.

4) After a successful deer hunting harvest, it is time to implement the remaining steps associated with field dressing a deer. I unpack each item from my deer cleaning kit.

5) Safety and sanitation are important parts of cleaning a deer. After the first time I learned how to field dress a deer, I decided to use latex gloves to protect my hands from bacteria. When you are planning your deer cleaning kit you could also use large plastic gloves sold at most sporting goods stores.

6) Once initial steps of cleaning a deer are complete, I wipe off my deer hunting knives with the wet rag or moist towel placing them into my pack.

7) After I have completed the steps detailed here on how to field dress a deer, I use the Ziploc-type bag to carry out the heart and liver. This keeps your clothes free from the blood associated with the process of cleaning a deer.

I use the hand sanitizer to clean my hands. I then pack up my deer cleaning kit.

9) I use the rope as a deer drag. This is a Marty Prokop how to clean a deer “must.”

Turkey Hunting Tips

Anyone who is planning to go turkey hunting should know that there are some great turkey hunting tips that they should be aware of. These tips will help them to get started and to have the most success on all their turkey hunting trips.

There are literally thousands upon thousands of different turkey hunting tips that you would find useful at some point, but you will learn more and more as you progress and gain more experience in the sport. For the time being, there are a few in particular that will come in handy during your hunting adventures.

One of the best tips involves setting up properly. When you are setting up on wild turkeys ahead of daylight, you need to make sure that you do not get to close to their roosting places. This is important for one because you want to get the best possible view, but also because you do not want them to hear you coming.

You are basically attempting to get closest to the turkey without spooking it off, and if you have found a tom that is placed on a hillside or part way up a crest you need to make an effort to climb the hill and then do the calling from a spot above the gobbler or in any case on the equal level.

Another tip is to never endeavor to shoot a swaggering gobbler.

Instead, you should wait until the turkey comes out of the swagger and extends its neck. This is because your goal with turkey hunting is to be able to take the best possible shot and plainly collect the turkey, so don’t make it any more difficult than you have to.

Patience is really a key trait here, and so one of the most important tips that any turkey hunter needs to know is this. You cannot get frustrated, and perhaps the most ignored ability in wild turkey hunting is the aptitude of being able to sit motionless and wait for a turkey to come around. Many people simply get bored and cannot handle doing this, so if you don’t have patience this may not be the sport for you.

With turkey hunting the best idea is to constantly be researching and reading and learning new things. There are really never enough tips and techniques that you can learn, because all of them are going to help you in your quest and offer you the best chances when you head out there on your next turkey hunting adventure.

Now for a real fun way of discovering free stuff. Every one loves a scavenger hunt; this site breaks the hunt down by region and state.
